Centenary Bank is one of Uganda’s leading commercial banks, established in 1983 with the primary goal of serving the rural and urban poor. Over the years, it has grown to become a significant player in Uganda’s banking industry, focusing on microfinance services, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and personal banking. With more than 70 branches across the country and over 190 ATMs, it serves millions of customers. Centenary Bank is well-known for its user-friendly services, such as mobile banking, internet banking, and savings products tailored to both individual and business needs.



The bank’s mission is rooted in financial inclusion, especially for underserved populations. By offering a wide range of services—from loans to savings and digital banking—it has become a reliable financial partner for many Ugandans, particularly those in rural areas who might not otherwise have access to banking services.

PayPal as an International Payment Platform

PayPal is a global online payment platform that allows users to make and receive payments digitally, providing a secure and efficient way to send money across the world. Founded in 1998, PayPal has grown to become one of the most widely used payment systems, with over 400 million active users in more than 200 countries.

With PayPal, individuals and businesses can link their bank accounts, credit cards, or debit cards to the platform, making it easier to perform online transactions. Whether you’re purchasing goods online, paying for services, or sending money to family and friends, PayPal provides a secure gateway for international payments.

Unfortunately, Centenary Bank in Uganda does not directly support receiving money from PayPal. PayPal only allows Ugandan users to send payments but not to receive payments into local bank accounts, including Centenary Bank.

PayPal’s services are limited in some countries, including Uganda, where users can only send money and make online purchases but cannot directly receive payments into local bank accounts like those in Centenary Bank. Despite this limitation, Ugandans can still access their funds by creating virtual PayPal accounts and withdraw  through virtual banking services that link virtual PayPal accounts to foreign bank accounts, such as those offered by Payoneer or Wise.

However, there are alternative methods for receiving PayPal funds in Uganda:

  1. Use a Virtual PayPal Account: You can create a virtual PayPal account linked to a virtual US or UK bank account. This setup allows you to receive payments and withdraw funds through services like Payoneer or Wise, which can transfer the funds to your local bank account in Uganda, including Centenary Bank.
  2. Payoneer: Payoneer is a popular service in Uganda that allows you to receive PayPal payments through a US bank account linked to your Payoneer account. You can then withdraw the funds to your Ugandan bank account.
  3. TransferWise (Wise): Wise can also help you transfer funds from PayPal to your local bank account through a similar process of linking a foreign bank account.
