My Personal Experience Using the AYANEO Flip DS: A Compact Dual-Screen Handheld PC That Redefines Gaming On the Go

When I first got my hands on the AYANEO Flip DS, I honestly didn’t expect it to become my favorite handheld gaming PC. I already own a Steam Deck, and I’ve tested the Lenovo Legion Go, AYANEO Air 1S, MSI Claw 7 and 8, plus both the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X. Each of these devices has strengths, but the Flip DS stands out in ways I didn’t realize mattered until I started using it every day.

The Flip DS is built around a clamshell dual-screen design that feels instantly practical. The compact form factor doesn’t come at the cost of controls or screen size, and I find it more comfortable to hold for long sessions compared to bulkier rivals. The second screen is more than a gimmick—it makes navigating Windows 11 far less painful. On other handheld PCs, moving through menus and small icons with analog sticks feels clunky. Even the Steam Deck, with its trackpads, only partially solves the problem. With the Flip DS, the second display allows for quick shortcuts, smooth desktop navigation, and even fingerprint sign-in, which adds a layer of convenience I didn’t realize I was missing.

When it comes to performance, the Flip DS runs on the same chip as many other handheld gaming PCs, so you won’t see a big leap in raw power compared to a ROG Ally or MSI Claw. It handles most of my Steam library comfortably, but don’t expect miracles on demanding AAA titles without tweaking settings. Battery life is also on the shorter side, and if you’re playing away from a charger, you’ll definitely feel the limitation. This is one area where the ROG Ally X has the edge on paper.

Still, the gaming experience on the Flip DS is unmatched in practicality. Being able to play games while lying in bed or on the go without constantly fighting with the interface makes it my go-to handheld. The portability is excellent, the design feels premium, and the dual screens open up possibilities for customization that competitors simply don’t offer.

Final Thoughts

The AYANEO Flip DS may not crush benchmarks or outlast rivals in battery life, but it delivers something equally valuable: ease of use, compact design, and smart functionality that makes handheld PC gaming feel natural. For me, that’s why it has become my most-used device despite owning and testing nearly every other big-name option. If you value portability, navigation, and an innovative design over raw specs, the Flip DS might just be the best handheld gaming PC you’ll ever own.
