Sonos Arc Ultra Review: Is it worthy the Upgrade

If you’re considering upgrading your home theater experience, the Sonos Arc Ultra Soundbar is a fantastic contender. Having tested this high-end soundbar, I was genuinely impressed by its ability to deliver not just loud cinematic sounds but also rich vocal details and immersive audio performance across all types of content, including TV, movies, and even YouTube videos.

This review will cover installation, performance, key features, pros and cons, and whether the Sonos Arc Ultra is the right choice for your setup.

Installation & Setup Experience

Setting up the Sonos Arc Ultra was straightforward, especially if you’re familiar with Sonos products. I opted for the Sonos wall mount, which made the installation process smoother. However, aligning the soundbar onto the wall mount took some adjustment—I had to slightly loosen and tighten the screws to ensure a secure fit.

A major plus is that you don’t need to screw the mount into wall studs; simple drywall anchors work just fine. Once mounted, the soundbar felt sturdy and well-balanced.

During setup, the Sonos app prompted me to complete Trueplay tuning, which optimizes sound based on room acoustics. While I appreciate the feature, I found it slightly annoying that opting out was not straightforward—especially if you’re planning to add surround speakers or a subwoofer later, which would require retuning.

1. Enhanced Sound Quality & Spatial Audio

One of the standout features of the Arc Ultra is its advanced transducer technology. In 2022, Sonos acquired a Dutch audio company, Mayht, whose expertise in transducers has significantly improved the directionality and immersion of sound in this soundbar.

• The bass response is much stronger than previous models, even without an additional subwoofer.
• It features adaptive Dolby Atmos technology, allowing sound to move dynamically around the room, creating an incredibly immersive experience.
• Even when watching casual YouTube videos, the mids and highs remain clear and detailed—something often overlooked in traditional soundbars.

2. Improved Touch Controls & Voice Assistance

The Arc Ultra introduces new touch controls along the top and back of the soundbar. It also includes a mute switch for privacy, which disables the microphone used for Sonos Voice Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

This is a welcome improvement for those who prefer hands-free control, but also want the ability to disable voice features when needed.

3. AirPlay 2 & Multi-Room Audio Integration

If you’re an Apple user, the Arc Ultra seamlessly integrates with AirPlay 2. This allows me to play Apple Music and other streaming services directly through my Apple Home setup.

Pros & Cons of the Sonos Arc Ultra

Pros:

Should You Upgrade to the Sonos Arc Ultra?

The big question—is the Sonos Arc Ultra worth it? That depends on your current setup:

• If you already own a Sonos Arc, the upgrade isn’t drastically different. The Arc Ultra offers better bass and improved transducers, but the original Arc still delivers excellent performance.
• If you’re upgrading from a Beam Gen 1 or Gen 2, the difference is massive—richer sound, stronger bass, and much better spatial audio.
• If you’re deciding between a full surround setup with the Beam Gen 2 vs. a standalone Arc Ultra, I’d recommend the Arc Ultra as a foundation. You can always add Era 100 or Era 300 speakers later for a full surround experience.

With only a $100 price difference between the Arc and Arc Ultra, it makes sense to go for the Arc Ultra, as it will receive better software support and performance longevity.
